In My Life.

John Lennon

Today marks the birth of John Lennon, a man of many talents. He was an English songwriter, musician, artist, author, political activist, and, my personal favorite, a Beatle. Through his powerful lyrics and songs, Lennon changed the lives of millions. He would have been seventy-three years old today.

Lennon wrote a song in 1965 called “In My Life”, about his own life growing up:

“There are places I’ll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I’ve loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more

Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more”

Lately in my English class, we have done a few creative thinking and “reflection” projects; choosing a personal motto, asking ourselves questions such as “what turns my heart” and “what sparks my mind”, and thinking about things that the world needs. I believe this way of thinking “outside the box” relates to how John Lennon was such an amazing songwriter–using his creativity and drawing upon his personal experiences to describe life.

Lennon’s music has been inspiring me ever since I was born. My father, also a huge Beatles and John Lennon fan, always tells me that when I was a baby, he used to sing me Beatles’ songs to get me fall asleep. I have grown up still listening to the Beatles and Lennon, being one of the few of my generation who is a big fan.

As I have gotten older, these songs and lyrics have become more and more relateable and understandable to me. These songs have changed many lives, including my own. The thoughts and emotions of two great friends, John Lennon and his songwriting partner Paul McCartney,  have inspired me and so many others.

And to that end, John Lennon’s music and spirit will live on forever.
